Motorola (formerly Orthogon Systems)

Who they are

Motorola (Orthogon Systems), developers of wireless technology and powerful non-line-of-sight (NLOS) broadband connections, is paving the way for broadband access to be made available to rural areas in the UK.

Based in Ashburton, Devon where the new initiative Broadband4Devon has been set up and near the UK's top wireless town of Exeter; Motorola is well placed to forge ahead.

What they do

Founded in 2000 to provide fixed wireless access, the company has expanded rapidly with the help of venture capital and inward investment from South West England via Business Link and government grants. This funding has enabled development and improvement of product to deliver point-to-point broadband connection around obstructed paths where other wireless systems are unable to operate.

Nigel King, Chief Technology Officer and founder of Orthogon Systems comments: "Initially we set up our business in South West England to benefit from the low cost property and highly skilled labour available. The provision of funding and commitment to broadband use has provided added incentives for us to stay. These are exciting times in the development of broadband and it's great to be situated in a region at the forefront of next generation technologies."
