Wave Hub
Who they are
Wave Hub is a
groundbreaking renewable energy project aiming to build an
electrical grid connection point around 10 miles offshore into
which wave energy devices would be connected.
The South West RDA has already provided over £2
million to investigate the technical, environmental, legal and
economic aspects of the proposed Wave Hub. Work is ongoing to
prepare legal contracts with device and project developers.
What they do
In June 2006, South West RDA applied to DTI and
the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs for consent
to construct the Wave Hub. South West RDA is also identifying
potential funders for the estimated £12.5 million construction
costs of the wave hub. In August 2006, DTI announced that the Wave
Hub would qualify for funding of up to £4.5 million under the
department's £50 million Marine Research Deployment Fund, if the
project gains consent.
Early in 2006 South West RDA named three companies it has chosen as
development partners for the project: Ocean Prospect Ltd; Ocean
Power Technologies and Fred Olsen Ld. There is still space for
other companies to join the project at a later date. South West RDA
is also seeking a private sector partner that would own and operate
Wave Hub.
