The Met Office

Who they are

Now located in Exeter, The Met Office is a research based organisation with a global reputation. Their solutions and services meet many needs, from the general public, government and schools, to broadcasters, online media, civil aviation and almost every industry sector in the world.

The company recently completed its relocation to Exeter where it now employs over 1,000 staff in state-of-the-art facilities. Major factors influencing the choice for Exeter were operating costs, workforce, image considerations and an effective relationship between Exeter City Council, the South West RDA, the University of Exeter and the business community.

What they do

Research and development play a vital role in all areas of meteorology and the Met Office is actively involved in numerous international collaborative projects, e.g. GEO and THORPEX. For example, GEO promotes the development of a comprehensive, co-ordinated, and sustained Earth observation system, among governments and international organisations, to significantly advance the collective ability to understand and address global environmental and economic challenges. Its aim is to develop a framework and implementation plan for building systems.

The Met Office is active in several of the groups within this programme. For more information, visit www.metoffice.gov.uk
