Freight
The majority of freight in the South West is
transported by road.
Rail freight originating in the South West rose
to 153 million tonnes between 1995 and 2006. The volume of sea
freight has also risen at a faster rate here than in the rest of
the UK. (Source: South West Observatory)
A new inter-modal rail freight handling facility and distribution
centre is currently under development at Hayes Farm near Exeter. It
will provide 61,000 square metres of accommodation and 750 jobs in
phase I and offer a facility to interchange bulk cargoes from rail
to road and vice versa, helping to encourage the bulk
transportation of containers by train. It will also have possible
scope for integrated air, rail and road transport.
